Judy's Logic Problems

February 2000 ClueJo Puzzle - Dining out in Style

Mrs White was the first to arrive at Diovanni's Restaurant where she and the other five Clue suspects plan to spend Valentine's Day chowing down on the best spaghetti in the area. Being in a somewhat festive mood and wanting to mark the occasion as one to remember, she brought with her three different paper sacks.

In one sack was a variety of utensils to eat with (chop sticks, ice cream scoop, pie server, soup ladle, and tongs), in a second a variety of different types of containers to drink from (an empty tin can, a two-handled mug, a mason jar, a measuring cup, and a small flower vase), and in a third a variety of different items to use for protecting ones clothing (a baby's bib, a bath towel, a cloth diaper, a handkerchief, and a pillow case)!

From the clues, can you determine the order in which each of the other five Clue suspects arrived, and the item each drew out of each of the three sacks. Note: Mrs. White ended up drinking from a soup bowl, eating with a spatula, and protecting her clothing with a wash cloth!

1. The person who ended up drinking from an empty tin can arrived immediately ahead of the person who tried to eat with the soup ladle, who arrived immediately before Col. Mustard.

2. The person who ate with the ice cream scoop and the person who ended up with the cloth diaper were Mr. Green and Mrs. Peacock, in some order.

3. Laughter erupted at the table as Prof. Plum tied the baby's bib around his neck as if it was something he did everyday.

4. The person who found eating spaghetti with chop sticks more difficult than expected (who wasn't the person who ended up drinking from a measuring cup) arrived immediately after the person who found eating with a pie server a rather tedious task.

5. The woman who ended up with a hand towel to protect her clothes wasn't the woman who drank from the two-handled mug.

6. The person who ended up with the handkerchief (who wasn't Mrs. Peacock) arrived immediately after Miss Scarlet, who arrived immediately after the person who ended up drinking from the mason jar.

7. It wasn't the person who had a blast trying to scoop up spaghetti with some tongs which used a pillow case to protect his or her clothes.

February 2000 EK Puzzle - Be My Valentine

Everett is a romantic at heart and one of his favorite holidays is Valentine's Day. He enjoys shopping for just the right card for the women in his life and many times that involves trips to several different places. The week before Valentine's Day Everett visited six different shops to find the perfect card for each recipient on his list - his aunt, daughter, mother, niece, sister, and of course, his wife.

From the clues can you determine the order in which he visited each of the six shops (one is The Emporium) and the person for whom he found the perfect card at each one - Amy, Carol, Jill, Kathi, Leah, or Verna?

1. Everett found the perfect card for his daughter at the store he visited immediately before he stopped in at Hearts & Flowers, which was the stop immediately before he picked out the card for Leah.

2. Murphy's Card Shoppe and the store where he found the perfect card for his wife were visited consecutively, in some order.

3. The card selected with great care for Jill (who is neither Everett's daughter nor mother) wasn't found at Sill's Stationary.

4. Amy, who is not Everett's sister, is not the one whose card was picked out among all those at either Markhall Cards or Sill's Stationary. The card Everett found for his sister (who isn't Leah) wasn't the one he found at Hearts & Flowers.

5. Neither Jill nor Leah (whose card wasn't found at Cards Galore) is Everett's aunt.

6. Three stops in consecutive order, from first to last, were the store where he found the card for his sister, Sill's Stationary, and the store where he found the card for Kathi which wasn't at Hearts & Flowers).

7. Everett's third stop wasn't at the store where he picked out the perfect card for his niece (who isn't Verna).

8. The card for Jill was found at the store Everett visited immediately after he visited Cards Galore, which was the stop immediately after he found the card for his niece.
