Judy's Logic Problems

February 2003 ClueJo Logic Problem- County Transit Service

The Riverton County Transit Bus Service makes a twelve-stop journey each day from the county seat of Rock Ridge to the county’s next largest city, Stone City. Usually most, if not all, of the seats are always occupied, but one very cold February day, following a blizzard the day before, Thomas Shanks, the bus driver, had only six passengers. Each passenger was picked up at one of the twelve stops and dropped off at one of the stops.

From the clues, determine each passenger’s name (two are Col. Mustard and Mrs. Peacock), and the stop where each passenger was picked up and the stop where each passenger was dropped off. The twelve stops are, in order from Rock Ridge to Stone City: Granite, Boulder Point, Flagstone, Crag Center, Mineral City, Cobblestone Corner, Jewel, Millstone, Sandville, Agate City, Flint Falls, and Gypsum Gap.

1. No passenger was picked up at a stop where another passenger had been dropped off.

2. At one point during the trip, Prof. Plum was the only passenger on the bus, and at another point Mrs. White was the only passenger on the bus.

3. All six passengers were occupying seats on the bus at one point during the trip.

4. Mr. Green was picked up at some point before Mrs. White.

5. Miss Scarlet got on the bus at one stop and got off the bus at the next stop.

6. One of the female passengers was picked up at Boulder Point and dropped off at Sandville. She was picked up at the stop just before one of the male passengers was picked up and dropped off just after the same male passenger was dropped off.

7. Mr. Green wasn’t the passenger who got off at Millstone, although he did get off the bus at least one stop before another male passenger disembarked.

February 2003 EK Puzzle - Rent-a-Bus

Last summer, Everett and his extended family had all planned to take their vacations around the same time. Camping was in order, even for Everett’s maternal and paternal grandparents, and rather than take several vehicles, they decided to use Rent-a-Bus and all travel together. Besides a lot of storage for all the camping gear and food, and shelter in case of bad weather, the bus also had a man’s and women’s bathroom! On the way up and back from their camping spot, each person sat in the same seat.

A day after returning from their vacation, Everett got a call from a Rent-a-Bus employee saying that they had several items for Everett to pick up which had been found aboard the bus - an address book, comb, crossword puzzle magazine, eyeglass case, fashion magazine, keys on a ring, lighter, novel, monogrammed pen, and sunglasses. Each item had been found on a seat on the bus, inadvertently left behind by the person who had occupied that seat.

From the clues, determine the seat (lettered A through BB in the diagram) in which each person sat during the trip to and from their camping area, and the items left behind by ten of the twenty-one occupants.

Note: The members of the vacation group included Everett’s maternal grandparents - Marie and Emer; his paternal grandparents -Sarah and Fred; his parents - Wilma and Calvin; his wife Sharon and their offspring - Megan and Shane; his sister Donna, Donna’s husband Jerry, and their two offspring - Julie and Scott; his brother Norman, Norman’s wife Sue, and their two offspring - Seth and Sam; his brother John, John’s wife Lori; and Sharon’s nephew Eric, who drove the bus to and from the vacation spot.

1. No married couple sat on the same side of the aisle. In only two instances did a person sit in a seat designated by a letter which was the same as the first initial as his or her first name.

2. There were exactly two window seats and two aisle seats on each side of the aisle which remained vacant during the trip to and back from the vacation spot.

3. In the seats behind the driver, one of the three who occupied aisle seats was the woman who forgot her comb (who sat at least three rows up from the woman who had left her address book on the bus).

4. Sue (who left behind a fashion magazine) sat to the immediate right of Donna, who sat directly behind Shane. John sat in a seat which was as far as possible, diagonally, from his grandmother, Marie.

5. Calvin sat to the immediate left of Everett and immediately behind Lori (who left behind a crossword puzzle magazine). The person who left behind the eyeglass case sat in the seat to the immediate left of Megan.

6. Seth, who had a window seat, sat next to an empty seat. Seth sat directly in front of Sharon, who sat to the immediate left of Wilma.

7. Sarah sat in seat P. Sam sat in seat B. The person who left behind the lighter sat in seat N. The person who left her sunglasses on her seat sat in seat S. Seats A and H remained empty during the trip.

8. Jerry sat to the immediate right of Scott, who sat directly behind Fred, who in turn sat directly across the aisle from Julie (who didn’t have a window seat).

9. The husband of the woman who sat in seat Y sat is seat F. The wife of the man who sat in seat J sat in seat P. The wife of the man who occupied seat O had left behind a novel she was reading during the trip.

10. Exactly four people who left items on the bus had window seats, two on each side of the aisle. The occupant of seat D left behind a monogrammed pen. One of Norman’s sons left behind a set of keys.

February 2003 Stefano Logic Problem - Birds of a Feather

This past summer, Stefano visited an old college buddy who now lives in South Africa. Stefano enjoys birds and has several birdhouses and feeders around his home, so while in South Africa Stefano took some pictures of some birds indigenous to that area and not usually found in the U.S. Stefano took a photo of each bird on a different day, Monday through Friday, and on each day of that week, he also came across another animal which gave him quite a fright, even though all of them were quite small and perfectly harmless (one was a hare which seemed to jump out of nowhere and caused Stefano’s heart to skip a beat or two!).

Each animal was encountered while his buddy, Buddy, was showing him a different area of his property which covers several acres - copse of trees, herb garden, hills near by, vegetable garden, and veld (long grass along the property line).

From the clues, determine the day of the week Stefano photographed each bird, the animal that Stefano also saw on each day, and the area where Stefano came across each small animal.

1. On one day, Stefano got a snapshot of a beautiful bird called a Lilac Breasted Roller, but this was not the day Buddy showed him the huge vegetable garden he plants every year.

2. Stefano stood in awe when he saw the little pack of meerkats, which previously he’d only seen on TV documentaries. However, as soon as they spotted Stefano and his friend, they quickly disappeared into their barrows, which weren’t near a copse of trees or near the vegetable garden.

3. It wasn’t on Friday that Stefano saw the meerkats, but he had the pleasure of seeing them sometime later in the week than the day he photographed the Lanner Falcon, which had been brought into the area to help control the pigeon population.

4. The five birds Stefano managed to get some excellent snapshots of were a Burchell’s Coucal (which has a melodious liquid trill and is about the size of a crow), a Hoopoe (who gets its name from its lovely HoopHoop call), the bird he got a snapshot on the day he almost fainted when a mouse ran up his pant leg, the bird he got a snapshot of when they visited the veld near the property, and the bird he photographed on Friday.

5. Stefano got quite a fright when he reached down to pick up a neat looking black rock only to find that it was a very large beetle which made (to Stefano’s thinking) an ominous hissing sound! This was the day before he got a snapshot of a Blue Crane, which is South Africa’s national bird and stands about three feet tall.

6. For a moment on one day Stefano thought he’d spotted a baby porcupine and jumped back right into Buddy, who laughed out loud. He then noticed that it was only a little hedgehog, which are very rare in that area. That day wasn’t the day he got the snapshot of a Lanner Falcon.

7. On one day, Stefano and his friend took a lunch and headed to some hills near the property, which was the day before he got some snapshots of the Hoopoe bird.

8. Stefano’s encounter with the little hedgehog didn’t take place on Friday, but was later in the week than when he and Buddy visited the copse of trees near the property.
