Judy's Logic Problems

July 2000 ClueJo Puzzle - Seating Arrangements

Dr. Grey and five of his friends (Inspector Black, Lady Melon, Miss Lavender, Mrs. Bluebell, and Sir Sable) played Clue last Saturday, sitting around his dining room table. The following Saturday, as they gathered around the table with the inevitable Clue game board in the middle of the table, each tried to remember where he or she had been seated the previous week. During the course of the discussion, it was found that of the statements made by each player as to their perspective recollections, exactly two were untrue - they had forgotten completely the seating arrangement. From the information, determine from the one statement made by each person, how each person was seated? Note: In all clues, right and left indicated to the immediate right and left of that person.

1. Sir Sable recalled that Mrs. Bluebell was on his right.

2. Mrs. Bluebell was positive that Miss Lavender was on her right.

3. Inspector Black remembered distinctly that Lady Melon was on his left.

4. Lady Melon was sure had Dr. Grey had been to her right.

5. Miss Lavender recalled being seated to the right of Sir Sable.

6. Dr. Grey's recollection was that he was to the left of Inspector Black.

Note: This puzzle is worked easier by simply using a piece of scratch paper as it does not solve well with a table or grid.

July 2000 EK Puzzle- Nero Foxx's Most Recent Case!

That over-weight, eccentric arm-chair detective, Nero Foxx has done it again! His most recent case involved him inviting the five main suspects in the case to his office for what his assistant, Everett Goodwin, calls the final show-down, and the police sneeringly refer to as grand-standing. Each of the five suspects in this case - Anne, Clint, Nancy, Samuel, and Tim, are in some order, surnamed Blenderman, Champagne, Kaser, Micka, and Pelletier, and they arrived at Nero's brownstone residence in a different order, first thru fifth. Each suspect is engaged in a different profession (attorney, banker, dentist, model, or photographer).

After a modest (and which Nero prefers to think of as genius) outline of how he reached his conclusions, the murderer's identity was revealed and he or she was taken into custody by the police. Determine each suspects first and last name, profession, and order of arrival. Should your deductions be correct, you will find the murderer to be the person who arrived sometime after the one surnamed Micka and before the attorney.

1. Clint, arrived sometime before the person surnamed Pelletier, who arrived at the brownstone sometime before the dentist.

2. Tim (whose surname is neither Blenderman nor Champagne) furtively looked around Nero's office upon entering it, as if committing it's contents to memory for some future illegal enterprise.

3. Everett was not really surprised at the arrival of the banker (whose surname is neither Blenderman nor Pelletier), even though he had made it clear from the beginning that he thought the whole idea a farce.

4. Samuel and the photographer have often played golf together. Tim arrived sometime before the person surnamed Kaser (who is neither Anne nor Samuel), who arrived sometime before the attorney.

5. Anne, who arrived immediately after the model, is neither the person surnamed Micka nor the person surnamed Pelletier.

6. After the arrival of the person surnamed Micka (which was sometime after the arrival of the photographer), Everett stayed near the front door waiting for at least one or more "guests" to arrive.
