Judy's Logic Problems

March 2004 ClueJo Logic Problem - Sea Cruise

When past summer, five of the ClueJo characters went on a sea cruise. Each individual whose a different cruise line and visited a different country (two visited Scandinavian countries - Norway and Sweden). While on board their particular ship, each individual was assigned a different steward to see to his or her personal needs. From the clues, determine the cruise line each ClueJo character sailed, the steward assigned to each person, and the country to which each person traveled.

1. Felix is not the steward assigned to the personal needs of either Dr. Gray or Miss Lavender.

2. Jacques was not the steward assigned to the individual who sailed to Brazil.

3. The destination of the person who sailed Atlantis Cruise Lines, who was neither Miss Lavender nor Lady Melon, was one of the Scandinavian countries.

4. Either the person who sailed Red Dawn Cruise Lines or the person to whom Pedro was assigned was Dr. Gray, and the other was the person whose destination was Greece.

5. If Felix was assigned to the individual who traveled to Australia, then Mrs. Bluebell sailed Atlantis Cruise Lines and Lady Melon was not the individual who sailed Mermaid Cruise Lines. Otherwise, Miguel was assigned to the individual who traveled to Australia, Mrs. Bluebell didn’t sail Atlantis Cruise Lines, and Lady Melon was the individual who sailed Mermaid Cruise Lines.

6. Miss Lavender (who didn’t travel on Carousel Cruise Lines) isn’t the person whose destination was to Norway.

7. Carlos was not the steward assigned to the individual whose destination was either Greece or Brazil, one of which was the destination of Sir Sable.

8. Jacques was the steward assigned to the person who sailed on either the Sea Princes Cruise Lines or Carousel Cruise Lines.

March 2004 EK Logic Problem - Captain Everett's Treasures

Everett had just finished reading a book on pirates of old so it isn't surprising that later that night he dreamed of being a pirate. In his dream, he was your typical notorious pirate with a peg leg, a parrot, and lots and lots of treasure plundered from other seagoing vessels! In his dream, Everett sailed the seven seas in search of a place to bury his treasure so that he, in turn, could not be plundered, and eventually he came to an atoll of five island which seemed ideal for his purpose. Starting at one island, and stopping at each island as he went from island to island, Everett buried a different type of treasure on each - diamonds, emeralds, gold, sapphires, or rubies. At each island, which he christened with a different name (one was Pingo-Pingo), he started loading up the emptying hold of the ship with a different type of food item.

From the clues, determine the order in which he visited each island (first through fifth), the name he gave each island, the treasure buried on each island, and the food taken on board at each island. Note: An atoll is a ring-shaped coral reef or a string of closely spaced small coral islands, enclosing or nearly enclosing a shallow lagoon.

1. The first island Everett visited wasn't the one he named Skull Isle or the one he named Crystal Cove Island, although he did visit Skull Isle just before he went ashore at Crystal Cove Island.

2. Three islands he stopped at consecutively were the island where he buried a chest full of emeralds, the island where he took on board some coconuts, and the island he christened Pollyanna.

3. After burying a chest full of gold, Everett land on a familiar looking island where he loaded up on some more bananas and then took off to plunder some more unsuspecting pirate ships.

4. Three island Everett visited consecutively were the island where he found some fowl, Crystal Cove Island, and the island where he buried a chest full of diamonds.

5. Landing on the island he named Heron Harbor, Everett was delighted to find several varieties of herbs and spices. At this point in his island hopping he had already taken on board both fowl and boar.

6. Everett didn't bury a chest full of rubies on the island where he took on board bananas, which wasn't the island named Pollyanna.

March 2004 Stefano Logic Problem - Going to Market

While Stefano was visiting his Aunt Agatha recently, she sent him to the store to pick up a few items. However, when making the list, she wrote down the brand name of each item, but failed to say what each item was! While at the store, Stefano asked for help from a different nearby employee for help (three of whom were males - Daniel, Glen, and Tom, and two of whom were females - Heather and Kristy). Stefano finally found each item, including the coffee, in a different aisle in the store (#1 through #5). From the clues, determine the name of the employee who helped Stefano find each item in each aisle (which they knew as Agatha shops there all the time and is well-known), and the brand name of each item (who was Shuttles). Note: When entering the store, the aisles start with #1 to the furthest left to #5 to the furthest right.

1. The item whose brand name was Meadow’s was found one aisle further left than the aisle with the item that Heather helped Stefano find, and somewhere further right than the aisle with the cheese.

2. It wasn’t Tom who helped Stefano find the product in aisle #3.

3. The item Tom helped Stefano find was in an aisle somewhere further right than where the Bodkin’s product was located, which was further right that the aisle where the cooking sherry was located.

4. One of the girls helped Stefano locate the Richland brand product, which was in an aisle further right that where rice was located, which was further right than the aisle where the wheat germ was located.

5. Glen isn’t the employee who helped Stefano find the HeartMaid brand product (which wasn’t the cooking sherry).

6. The wheat germ was located in an aisle further right that the aisle where Stefano found the HeartMaid product, which was further right than the product pointed out by Kristy.
