May 2000 EK Logic Problem - Granny McClures Cures

It's a fact that Granny McClure ain't never been to a doctor. As Granny say, "if the cure can't be found growin' in the good earth, there ain't no cure!" Now, folk know that Granny is as healthy as a mule, so she ain't no testimony, but you get to conversing with some of the mountain folk who go to Granny with their ailments, and you'll get all the testimony you need. According to some, Granny can whip up some healing with a fist full of this and a fist full of that, and 'for you know it, its as if it ain't never been.

Recently, five of Granny's neighbors recollected how they went to Granny for their ailments the previous week, and she fixed them right up. Outsiders might be a bit surprised by this, as all five of them were Hopfields, but, as Granny put it, "there can't be no feuding if there ain't n'body to feud with." The object here is to determine the first name of each Hopfield Granny treated (one is Melissa Sue), each one's ailment (one of which she treated with an infusion), and the name of the plant Granny gathered.

1. Granny grows both Snake Root and Honey Staff in her garden, and the other three are found in the woods near her home.

2. The two Hopfields who arrived at Grannys in the late afternoon were Lil' Luke and the person who Granny treated with an emollient, which was not concocted from Honey Staff (course, that is just as well for the ailing patient, for despite it's name, Honey Staff smells conspicuously like skunk oil).

3. Big Everett (who didn't suffer from an earache) was treated with a plant Granny found growing in the woods, and Lil' Luke (who was not treated with a tincture) was treated with a plant Granny grew in her own garden.

4. Two Hopfields are Amy May (who isn't the girl Granny treated with Featherlace) and the female who received the emetic tonic (mixed together with a plant Granny grows in her own garden).

5. Either the person who suffered from laryngitis (which just thrilled Granny to no end, as she didn't have to talk to her) was treated with Porcupine Sage, or the person who suffered from bee stings was treated with Milkwort, but not both.

6. The two Hopfields that showed up just before supper time were the one who was suffering something horrid from bee stings (which wasn't treated with Honey Staff) and the one who had gotten into some poison ivy; the other three showed up at Granny's sometime during the morning.

7. Either Sunny Lou and the person who Granny treated with Snake Root (who didn't suffer from laryngitis) both arrived at the McClures in the morning, or they both came later nigh on supper time.

8. Big Everett isn't the Hopfield who suffered from rheumatism, but one of these two left Granny's with a poultice applied.
