Judy's Logic Problems

May 2004 ClueJo Logic Problem - Child's Play

In the village were our six Clue suspects live is a small park with a few picnic tables, public restrooms, and very few old play equipment for children. The new children’s playground officially opened last night. All but Prof. Plum, who was away at an archaeological dig, attended, and through the previous two week, did their share of helping out in building the new playground, which was built all by volunteers (1,247 of them on one week ranging in age from 8 to 83!). Our own six volunteers helped out with building on a different project and each donated a different amount of money ($230, $235, $240, $245, or $250) for a different item or items around the playground. Of course most of the materials were donated by local businesses and individuals living in the area.

From the clues, can you determine which character helped out in what area with volunteer work (one person helped hang swings on the new swing set) and the amount of money each donated for a different item for the park (one person donated toward nifty new signs for the restrooms doors).

1. The character who helped out with doing the decking on the new pavilion donated the most money, but not for the flagstone path around the fountain.

2. Col. Mustard donated the least amount of money, but spent more time in volunteer work than any of the others.

3. The woman whose donation went for a mosaic game table and chairs donated exactly $10 less than did the woman whose donations were used for plants around the fountain.

4. Mr. Green, who donated the flagstones around the fountain in the middle of the park, isn’t the person who helped work on the floor of the Crazy Castle or helped laid the decking around the new pavilion.

5. Mrs. Peacock helped painted the leaves and branches on the tree house.

6. Miss Scarlet (who isn’t the one who helped with decking the pavilion) spent more in donations than did the person who donated for a mosaic game table and chairs.

7. The person who helped erect the tunnel slide spent either exactly $10 more or exactly $10 less than the person who helped lay the floor in the Crazy Castle, with its tilted floors and walls!.

8. Mrs. White, who donated money for two benches for the playground donated exactly $10 more than the person who helped erect the tunnel slide.

May 2004 Stefano Logic Problem - Going Hiking

A few weeks ago Stefano visited his Aunt Agatha. Agatha lives in a wonderful house at the edge of the woods and one day Stefano, his aunt, and four of her friends went hiking in the woods nearby. Each had taken along a disposable camera and wanted to get a picture that he or she could send in to a magazine that all six subscribe to - America’s Wonderland. Each disposable camera held 12 snapshots and by the time each got the snapshot that he or she thought would be the best to send in, he or she had already used a different number of shots (5, 6, 7, 9, 10, or 11).

Preparing for hiking, each wore a different colored shirt (blue, green, orange, purple, red, or yellow) and a different colored hat of the same six colors, although no person wore a shirt and hat of the same color and no two wore items of the same two colors. From the clues, determine the color of shirt each wore, the color of hat each wore, the snapshot each took which they thought would be the best to send into their favorite magazine (one got a snapshot of some beavers building a dam), and the number of photos each had taken before each got that special snapshot.

1. The six hikers were Tina, the hiker who had already used 11 of his or her 12 snapshots, the two hikers who wore yellow, and the two hikers who had worn red.

2. The six hikers were Agatha, the hiker who wore the red shirt, the hiker who wore the green hat, the hiker who had taken 5 of his or her 12 snapshots, and the two hikers who had worn orange.

3. The six hikers were Dinah, the hiker who wore the yellow shirt, the hiker who wore the red hat, the hiker who got a snapshot of some prairie dogs in an uncultivated field (who had taken one fewer snapshots than the hiker who got the picture of some squirrels playing in a tree), and the two hikers who had worn green.

4. The six hikers were Mitchell, the hiker who wore the purple hatt, the hiker who got snapshot of some turtles basking on a log in a pond, the hiker who had used 9 of his or her snapshots, and the two hikers who had worn blue.

5. The six hikers were Gerry, the hiker who got a snapshot of a doe and her fawn, the two hikers who had used 7 and 10 of their snapshots, and the two hikers who had worn purple.

6. The six hikers were Agatha, Stefano, the hiker who wore the red hat, the hiker who got a snapshot of the prairie dogs, the two hikers who had used 6 and 9 of their snapshots.

7. The six hikers were Stefano, the hiker who wore the blue hat, the hiker who had gotten a great snapshot of some squirrels playing in a tree, a hiker who had not used either 6 or 10 of his or her snapshots when he or she got a snapshot of dozens of butterflies in a field of sunflowers, and the two hikers who had worn yellow.
