October's 2002 ClueJo Puzzle - The Muffin Stand

Saturday was the grand opening of The Muffin Stand concession at the Middleton Mall, and manager Stan Standford was very pleased by the response. In the first fifteen minutes of business, he had six customers who, among them, purchased all fifteen varieties of muffin in his display case. Stan sold each type of muffin to only one customer, and no customer purchased more than four varieties. From the clues, determine the position (A through O in the illustration) of each variety of muffin in the display case, as well as the customer who purchased each variety.

Muffins: Apple raisin bran, apple walnut bran, black-pepper bacon, cranberry orange bran, green-chili cheddar, lemon poppy-seed, oatmeal blueberry, oatmeal chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin, orange cardamom, orange date, pineapple coconut bran, raspberry lime, whole-wheat cheddar, zucchini bran.

1. Both Prof. Plum and Dr. Gray purchased muffins containing cheddar. Both Mrs. Bluebell and Mrs. White purchased at least one type of muffin containing oatmeal.

2. All the muffins containing orange can be found in one column of the display case. All the muffins containing oatmeal (no two of which are immediately next to one another) can be found in one row in the display case.

3. All of the muffins selected by Mrs. Bluebell (who selected exactly one more variety than at least one other woman) are in the same row.

4. The muffins containing apples are side by side in the same row. The muffins containing raisins are next to one another in the same column. All of the varieties of muffins containing a fruit with the word “berry” in it were purchased by the same woman and are in the same row.

5. The zucchini bran muffins purchased by Mrs. White are displayed in position C, immediately between two varieties of muffin purchased by one other woman.

6. Dr. Gray is the only customer to purchase only one variety of muffin. The variety he selected is in one corner, diagonally across the display case from the green-chili cheddar muffins, which are in another corner.

7. Among Miss Scarlet’s purchases were some orange date muffins. Among Miss Lavender’s purchases were some oatmeal raisin muffins.

8. It was not Miss Lavender who purchased the pineapple coconut bran muffins in position D, although Miss Lavender did purchase a variety of muffin in row 3, to the immediate right of a variety of muffin selected by Miss Scarlet.

9. The black-pepper bacon muffins are in one corner, diagonally opposite the lemon-poppy seed muffins, which are in another corner. The lemon-poppy seed muffins (which are not in the same row as any varieties purchased by Dr. Gray) are directly below the oatmeal chocolate chip muffins.

10. Prof. Plum purchased more muffins than any of the other five customers. None of the muffins purchased by Prof. Plum were in the middle row.

11. The same person who purchased the orange cardamom muffins purchased the variety displayed in position E and in position O.

October 2002 EK Puzzle- The Kasers Play Ball

Everett and his family played baseball last Sunday afternoon in a vacant lot near their home. One team included Everett, Everett’s father Calvin, Everett’s wife Sharon, his sister Donna and her husband Jerry, his brother Norman and his wife Sue, and his brother John and his wife Lori. They played against all the young people in the Kaser family plus a few of their friends. Unfortunately, the younger generation stomped the adults by a score of 21 to 13!

Afterwards, Everett decided to challenge one of the members of Kasergames who constructs logic problems to figure out which person played which position (can you guess who that person is? LOL). He wrote out the clues for her, and had each family member make two statements. The catcher and the pitcher were to make two false statements. The three who played outfield positions were to make one false statement and one true statement, and the other four - those who played short stop, first base, second base, and third base where to make all true statements.

From the clues, can you also determine which family member played which position?

1. Calvin’s two statements were A) I was not the pitcher, and B) Donna wasn’t an outfielder.

2. Donna’s two statements were A) Sharon wasn’t an outfielder, and B) Everett played left field.

3. Everett’s two statements were A) Sue played shortstop, and B) I was not the pitcher.

4. Jerry’s two statements were A) Norman was not the pitcher, and B) Norman was the third baseman.

5. John’s two statements were A) Donna played second base, and B) I was not the pitcher.

6. Lori’s two statements were A) I was not the pitcher, and B) John played first base.

7. Norman’s two statements were A) Sharon was the catcher, and B) Calvin played shortstop.

8. Sharon’s two statements were A) Calvin played third base, and B) Everett played an outfielder.

9. Sue’s two statements were A) John was the catcher, and B) Jerry played right field.

October 2002 Stefano Logic Puzzle - Strange Dreams

Stefano has worked at Gordino's Italian Restaurant for many years, and has been proud of the fact that it has always received a 5-star rating from the various restaurant critics around the country, which is the highest rating a restaurant can receive. In the past year, five new restaurants have opened in his city, each serving a different type of food - Chinese, French, German, Hungarian, or Swedish. Being the curious type, Stefano decided to dine out at each one to see how their service and quality of food compared to Gordino's. He dined out at each one during one week, Monday through Friday, and on Saturday gave the owner his opinion of each one.

Stefano gave each a different rating (from a 1-star to a 5-star restaurant). At each restaurant, he paid a different amount for each meal ($8.00, $8.50, $9.00, $10.00 and $12.00), which he found quite reasonable, but a strange thing happened each evening. After dining out at each restaurant, that same night he had a very strange dream. Each night he had a different dream, and they were so weird he decided against telling the owner of Gordino's about them!

From the clues, determine the evening he dined at each restaurant, the price he paid for each meal, the rating he gave each restaurant, and the strange dream he experienced each night after retiring.

1. Stefano's evening meal cost more the night he ate at the Hungarian restaurant than it did at both the restaurant he ate at Thursday evening, and the night he dreamt that he was seated in a restaurant and he and everyone else in the restaurant had clothes on that were way too small for them. In his dream he could even hear ripping sounds as the back end of men's pants split out when they went to be seated.

2. The meal Stefano ate at the Swedish restaurant was later in the week than the meal he paid $9.00 for, which was later in the week than the evening he dreamt he was stuck to his chair with super glue and couldn't get his wallet out to pay for the meal or leave a tip (which was the night he rated the restaurant he dined at as a 3-star restaurant).

3. Stefano paid more for the meal he had at the French restaurant than he did at both the Swedish restaurant and the restaurant where later in the evening he dreamt he had ordered piles of boxes of Cracker Jacks, looking for a prize in each one which would help pay for his meal (which was earlier in the week than when he dined at the French restaurant).

4. He rated the German restaurant one star lower than he did the restaurant he ate at the night he dreamt that everyone's clothes were too small. Stefano paid more for his meal at the German restaurant than he did at the one where later he dreamt everyone's clothes were too small, but less than he paid on Tuesday night. The restaurant he dined at Tuesday night he gave a 4-star rating.

5. The five restaurants are the Chinese restaurant, the restaurant where he dreamt of the Cracker Jacks, the one he ate at on Thursday night, the restaurant where he paid $8.00 for his meal, and the restaurant he gave a 5-star rating.

6. Stefano paid more for his meal on Monday night than he did the night he ate at the French restaurant or the night he dreamed he had shrunk to only 2 inches tall and was swimming in a bowl of chicken noodled soup (which was on Thursday night).

7. The restaurant he dined at the night he dreamt that no one in the place had any silverware and everyone was looking around to see how others were going about eating their meal was the night he gave a rating that was exactly 3-stars more than the restaurant he dined at on Wednesday night.
