Judy's Logic Problems

September 2002 ClueJo Puzzle - Post Office Visit

Recently, five of the Clue Characters stood patiently in line waiting for Mrs. Peacock to mail off several letters and packages. Finally, she left and the remaining five were finished in no time as each had only one letter and one package to mail. Each character was sending a letter to a different US city, all of which start with the letter M (one is Michigan), and each was mailing a package to a different European country.

From the clues, determine the order in which each character stood in line (1st thought 5th), the city to which each letter was to be mailed, and the country to which each package was to be mailed.

1. Both the person who was mailing a letter to Missouri and the person who was mailing a package to Ireland stood in line behind at least one other person.

2. The individual mailing a package to Austria stood in line immediately ahead of the person mailing a letter to Montana, who stood in line immediately ahead of Mr. Green (who wasn’t sending a package to France).

3. The person mailing a letter to a friend in Mississippi stood in line somewhere behind Col. Mustard and somewhere ahead of the person mailing a package to Finland.

4. At least one individual stood in line ahead of the person mailing a package off to France.

5. Prof. Plum (who didn’t mail a letter to anyone in Montana) is not the person who sent a package off to Finland.

6. Mr. Green did not mail a letter to Minnesota. The person mailing a letter to Minnesota wasn’t the person who also was sending a package to Germany.

7. Neither Mrs. White (who was in line ahead of at least three other people) nor Miss Scarlet (who was in line ahead of at least two other people) were mailing a package to Ireland.

September 2002 EK Puzzle - At the Carnival

This past Friday night, Everett and several members of his family went to the Carnival. While there, Everett and his wife Sharon, and their two children Megan and Shane, as well as Everett’s brother Norman and his wife Sue, and their two children, Seth and Sam, and Everett’s sister Donna and her husband Jerry, and their two children, Julie and Scott, played a different type of game.

The games were played in a different order by exactly two of the family members (one adult and one young person) as they walked the Midway of the carnival (from first to last, Duck Shoot, Darts, Ring Toss, Bingo, Dime Toss, and Basketball). Each pair of individuals who played any one game also opted to eat the same type of food (one pair had berocks). From the clues, determine the two individuals who played each game and what each pair ate.

1. The two individuals who ate cotton candy (neither of whom was Sam) played a game on the Midway immediately after Seth and his adult partner played a game, and immediately before Sue and a member of the younger generation played a game.

2. Julie and her partner, Norman and his partner, and the two individuals who had nachos played Bingo, Dime Toss, and Basketball, in some order.

3. Norman and his partner, who wasn’t Shane, didn’t have cotton candy to eat.

4. The two individuals who ate corn dogs played a game on the Midway sometime before Donna and her partner (who wasn’t Julie).

5. Sam and his partner, Everett and his partner, and the pair who ate coney dogs played Duck Shoot, Darts, and Ring Toss, in some order.

6. Scott and his partner are not the pair who had funnel cake to eat.

7. One pair, which included Sharon, played a game on the Midway sometime after Megan and her partner played a game.

8. Seth (who didn’t have nachos) and his partner (who wasn’t Norman) aren’t the two individuals who ate coney dogs.

September 2002 Stefano Puzzle - Dots on the Map

When traveling across country, one will often pass through tiny towns that are only dots on the map. When Stefano was driving across the Midwest, he stopped at five such small towns, each of which had an unusual name. Stefano stopped in each little town for a different reason (in one town, he stopped to eat at the cafe), each of which offered two different services. Although the towns were small, outside each business was a spanking new vending machine where one could get a nice cold drink. Each town had a different population (15, 21, 24, 27, or 32 citizens). From the clues, determine the business in each town (one is Micropolis), the reason Stefano stopped in each town (in one town he asked for directions), and the population of each town.

Bait shop: bait and feed
Cafe: bait and food
Feed store: feed and gas
Gas station: bait and gas
General store: food and feed

1. The population of Bloomers is less than that of the town in which the one business is the general store.

2. The three towns in which Stefano could have bought animal feed were Blink, the one with the population of 32, and the one in which he stopped get a cold drink from a vending machine.

3. The business in Cowlick (which does not provide food for human consumption) is not the gas station.

4. The three towns in which Stefano could not have gotten gas were Plenty, the town with a population of 15, and the town in which he stopped to stretch his legs (which was not the town with a population of 21).

5. Had Stefano planned on doing any fishing, he could have gotten bait at any of one of three businesses: the one in Blink, the one where the one business was a cafe, and the one with a population of 27.

6. Stefano stopped to get gas, but not in the town whose one business is a gas station.
