Judy's Logic Problems

September 2003 ClueJo Puzzle - Prof. Plum's Travels

During the month of September, Prof. Plum traveled throughout South America on a business trip. While there, he remembered his friends back home and during the month, he sent each of the other five Clue characters, including Col. Mustard, a gift from the country he happened to be visiting at the time - Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador, Paraguay, or Peru. On the day that each Clue character received his or her package (8th, 19th, 22nd, 26th, or 29th), he or she also received a different number of letters in the mail (personal, junk, etc., which has nothing really to do with this problem except for the total number received by each). In addition, the number of letters are not included here in the introduction as discovering each is part of the problem. From the clues, can you determine the day each month that each individual received his or her package from Prof. Plum, what the gift was and where it was postmarked from, and the number of letters which accompanied the package when it was delivered?

1. Mrs. White received her package exactly three days before Mr. Green received his.

2. The person who received a package from Prof. Plum mailed from Argentina received two fewer letters than Mrs. Peacock, but twice as many letters as the person who received his or her package from Prof. Plum on September 8th.

3. Miss Scarlet isn’t the one who received the exquisitely craved bird figurine.

4. The person who received the fewest number of letters received the package which contained a 2004 calender featuring scenes from the country from which it was sent (which was not postmarked from either Brazil or Paraguay).

5. The package postmarked from Brazil wasn’t the package that contained the water globe.

6. The individual who received the book on natural wonders of South America (which wasn’t sent from Peru) received his or her package exactly one week before the person who received the beautiful water globe.

7. At total of 14 letters accompanied the package which contained the bird figurine.

8. Mrs. Peacock, who received her package on September 29th, received four fewer letters than the person who received his or her package from Peru (which wasn’t the handwoven scarf).

9. The person whose gift was the water globe (who received his or her package exactly three days after Miss Scarlet received hers) received half as many letters than Mr. Green did when he received his package.

10. It wasn’t from Ecuador that Prof. Plum sent a package to either Mrs. White or Miss Scarlet.

September 2003 EK Puzzle - Bicycles Build-for-Two

Everett and his family love doing things together, and they are always looking for something new and unusual to participate in. Recently, Everett discovered a new business in town where one could rent a bicycle-built-for-two. This past Saturday, Everett and several members of his family rented six bicycles and took off to spend the afternoon riding along a nearby nature trail. The family members included Everett’s wife, Sharon, and their two offspring - Megan and Shane; Everett’s sister Donna and her husband Jerry, and their two offspring - Julie and Scott; and, Everett’s brother Norman, his wife Sue, and their two offspring - Sam and Seth. Each bicycle was painted a basic black and each was spruced up with matching seats and handlebar grips in one of six different colors - blue, green, orange, purple, red, and yellow.

The group took off to spend a few hours riding on a nearby nature trail, and since it was rather narrow, they rode single file. From the clues, determine the order that each bicycle traversed the trail - first through sixth, the two people who rode each bike and whether he or she rode on the front seat or the back seat, and the color of each bicycles’ seat and handlebar grips. Note: Front seat riders included Donna, Julie, Megan, Norman, Shane, and Sharon.

1. Seth and his partner rode immediately in front of Norman and his partner.

2. Of Julie, Donna, and Shane, one rode the bicycle with yellow seats and handlebar grips, one partnered up with Everett, and one partnered up with Jerry, and none of these were either on the first or last bicycle in the line of riders.

3. The front seats of the fourth and fifth bicycles in the line of riders (one of which had green seats and handlebar grips) were occupied by individuals of different genders.

4. The riders on the bicycle with purple seats and handlebar grips rode somewhere in front of Donna and her companion and immediately behind Sam and his riding companion.

5. Megan’s bicycle companion was either Jerry or Sam.

6. Sharon didn’t partner up with either Seth or Scott.

7. Jerry and his companion rode immediately in front of Julie and her companion and immediately behind the two who rode the bicycle with orange seats and handlebar grips.

8. Sam and his companion and the pair who rode the bicycle with red seats and handlebar grips had the first and fourth places in the line of riders, in some order.

September 2003 Stefano Puzzle - The Catacombs

This is the second part of a logic problem by Mark Eustace, a friend of mine from England. All I've done is insert Stefano into the puzzle. If you just came to this page, you might want to work Part I, which appeared in August, 2003. Thanks again Mark, great work!

Last month, In Part 1 of the Grecian Mystery - The Cube - Stefano and his uncle, Professor Silus Malvern, solved the mystery of The Cube and retrieved the golden key that opens the door to the Tomb of Galista. The approximate location of the tomb has been known for many years, deep in the complex catacombs under an ancient Greek city. However, such are the dangers that lurk inside the caves that, although many have tried to infiltrate them, none have succeeded in finding the tomb.

Last year, Silus found another parchment that appeared to reveal the secrets of the catacombs with a series of clues. Each cave has its own name and a unique marking or feature inside the opening that identifies it. After studying the parchment, the Professor is convinced the Tomb lies at the end of one of five caves. Four of the five caves has a different fate awaiting anyone who travels along its perilous path. Can you work out which cave Stefano and his Uncle Silus should explore to locate the Tomb of Galista and all its vast treasures? Note: The hieroglyphics, iron cross, and painting are manmade, but the other two features inside the opening of each cave are not.

1. Lambda Cave is 200 paces longer than Iota Cave, but shorter than Tau Cave.

2. Creatures will decide the fate of the traveler who takes the path of the cave marked by hieroglyphics.

3. No trap door awaits the adventurer who unwisely travels through the cave marked with the yellow crystal.

4. The cave marked with hieroglyphics is more than 2000 paces long.

5. Pi Cave (which does not end with a trap door) is longer than Tau Cave.

6. No poison darts wait at the end of the longest cave.

7. Iota Cave, which is not marked by stalactites, doesn’t have either snakes or scorpions waiting at the end.

8. The cave marked by iron cross is 400 paces longer than the cave marked by a yellow crystal - the same number of paces that is the difference in length between Nu Cave and Iota Cave.

9. The cave marked by a stalactites is shorter than the cave marked by a yellow crystal.

10. It is further to the scorpions' nest than the snake pit.

11. The cave that is 2200 paces long does not end with a trap door.
