JAMES BRAXTON

James Braxton, Pvt. Co. K, 43rd USCT enrolled May 24, 1864 at Waterford, Pa.  The 43rd USCT left Philadelphia on April 18, 1864 for Annapolis, Maryland.  James was born in Meade Co, Kentucky and was aged 21 at the time he enrolled for three years service.  He was a laborer at the time.  He is listed as having black eyes, black hair, black complexiion and was 5" 3" tall.  His service was credited to Covington, Clearfield Co., Pennsylvania.  The Regiment moved quuickly to Virginia and particpated in major battles at Appomattox and Peterburg.  They were present for the surrender of Lee and his armies.  The Regiment was moved to Texas on the Rio Grande opposite Mattamoras, Mexico until October 1865.  During July-August 1865 James was a Guard at the hospital in Brownsville, Texas.  He was mustered out on October 20, 1865 and was owed a Bounty of $100.
