James D. Dickens

James Dickens, Pvt., Co. I, 45th USCT was enrolled on August 8, 1864 at Trenton, NJ and was mustered in on 15 August 1864 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  He was a substitute for Alexander H. Bodeu.  He was age 21 at the time and is listed with brown eyes, black hair and black complexion.   He was 5' 7" tall.  The Regiment participated in major battles in Virginia including the Battle of Chaffin's Farm, Petersburg, the pursuit of Lee and Appomattox.  It was present for the surrender of Lee and his armies.  James was promoted to Sergeant but later reduced to Private during late 1864.  From November 1864 through April 1865 James served as a hospital attendant.  The Regiment was later moved to Edinburg, Texas on the Mexican Frontier until November 4, 1865 when James was mustered out at Brownsville, Texas.  A final note indicates that James owed the U.S. $85.35 for clothing he was charged for since his original enrollment.
