"History tells a story. This story is a fascinating one of our gradual understanding of what myasthenia gravis (MG) is, and what it means to many other similar conditions. The story stretches back to the beginnings of neurology when MG perplexed physicians then by its fluctuating course and its lack of visible pathology. And the story involves as well brilliant modern discoveries, some unexpected, which helped elucidate our basic understanding of many of MG's protean manifestations. In between is a story of tantalizing clues, unsolved puzzles, wild guesses, controversies, wrong turns and hard work contributed by talented people from many fields, including microscopy, botany, pharmacology, pathology, physiology, molecular biology, genetics, experimental neurology, internal medicine, and thoracic surgery. Many of the lessons these people learned about MG apply to the understanding of other more common autoimmune conditions such as juvenile diabetes, thyroid disease, lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. They serve as well as examples of the give and take in the biological sciences that -- with luck -- gradually builds sufficient knowledge that it can be used for the successful treatment of patients with these conditions." |
