Adapted from Conan Doyle's classic of the
same name, this production was the first of 15 films to
feature Basil and Nigel as Holmes and Watson. It is also
the only film in this series true to the Doyle canon, with
only a few minor additions to the screenplay. This film
played to sold-out audiences and was featured with a Buster
Keaton parody Sherlock Jr. (1939) and a filmed interview
of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle!
It seems, by looking through the credits, that the producers
were a bit unsure about their newly paired duo! If you look
closely you will notice that Rathbone receives not first
but second billing, losing out to Greene. Bruce is even
further down the list at forth from the top!
Surprisingly, this film was to end with an unheard of reference,
for the late 1930's, to Holmes' cocaine addiction!
"Watson, the needle!"
In his autobiography Rathbone states,
"Of all the 'adventures' The Hound is my favorite story..."
E-Mail Me!
The
moor used in the filming of The Hound of the Baskervilles (1939) was
built on a sound stage in Hollywood.
It was so HUGE (a
little larger than a football field) that actor Richard Greene was
known to have been LOST on the set!
