In a battle of the sexes Holmes meets The
Spider Woman, played by actress Gale Sondergaard. Through
her popularity and style she would become what many fans
would call a Female-Moriarty. Sondergaard, who won an Oscar
for her supporting performance in Anthony Adverse (1936)
, would make a spin-off appearance with Rondo Hatton in
The Spider Woman Strikes Back (1946).
Look for Gale in other films including, Cat and the Canary,
The (1939), Mark of Zorro, The (1940), and Anna
and the King of Siam (1946).
Included in this film you will see a few tidbits borrowed
from Doyle's The Sign of the Four and also from The
Adventure of the Devil's Foot.

Holmes'
rival Adrea Spedding, AKA: Spider Woman, was so appealing that actress
Gale Sondergaard would appear
in the Non-Holmesian spin-off, The Spider Woman Strikes Back (1946),
but she would NOT be cast as the Spider Woman!
