Their  Story

Monica Rae finally convinced Ivan to try a square dance class in January of 1993 through the "rowdy" Sierra Hillbillies in Santa Clarita. It took only one night – Ivan was hooked! Before they graduated from their beginning class, they started their first calling class with caller/instructor Arlen Miller. By the time they graduated from calling school in December of 1993, they were already doing guest tips at local clubs. The Steins’ initiation dance was November 25, 1994 for the Sierra Hillbillies.

In May, 1995 they were awarded the Supreme Audio scholarship by Bill and Peggy Heyman, owners of Supreme Audio/Hanhurst’s Tape and Record Service and attended a second calling school with Deborah (Parnell) Carroll, and Frank Lescrinier.

In January 1996, Ivan and Monica Rae began teaching their first class with the Sierra Hillbillies and in January of 1997, they started teaching square dance in conjunction with the Golden Oak Adult School, an association that lasted until June, 2000. In the fall of 2000, the Sierra Hillbillies regained classes and retained Ivan and Monica as their instructors.

Ivan and Monica Rae are one of only a few husband-and-wife caller teams in the world!  They have called at National and California State Conventions, the Jerry Lewis MDA dance-a-thon in Phoenix,  Toys for Tots in Bakersfield, and the USDA 5th Saturday Dances.

Monica Rae and Ivan call through Plus, enjoy doing duets and love to do hoedowns or "one night stands" for people who don’t know how to dance, but think it might be fun to do at a party. Monica also really enjoys teaching beginning classes.

Ivan and Monica Rae have been members of Callerlab since 1994 and through that membership are currently licensed by BMI and ASCAP.  In the past, Monica has been the Interclub Callerlab coordinator, the Treasurer of GLAACA, and the Treasurer of WCA.  She is currently the Secretary of the Cow Counties Callers Association (CCCA).
