July 2000
As there is not a whole lot going on in Washington, I really don’t have a lot to report in this issue of our State newsletter. I am sure that most retirees are already aware that they can now make more money than before under Social Security once they pass the age of 65. No longer are retirees penalized should they make too much money. That is one good thing that came out of Washington, but I don’t expect a whole lot more than that until after November.
We just completed the State Seminar, and I was surprised at having so many people in my retirement class. The questions asked me during the class show me that people still intend to retire from the Post Office as soon as they possibly can. Some of the people attending my class still had ten or more years to go before they would even be eligible. But I guess I can understand their thinking, considering the conditions at the Post Office.
It seems like no craft has had to put up with the conditions that the carrier craft has been subjected to. And even though we know this has been going on for some time now, it is somehow becoming even worse. I truly believe that as I go from office to office selling uniforms, and listen to not only the carriers, but the supervisors, too. My advice to the disgruntled supervisors when I hear them griping is that they can buy a uniform and go back to carrying. Some of them have actually done that, although I don’t think they were heeding any advice from me. They just got fed up with what they had to put up with.
If there is any branch out there who was not able to attend the State Seminar, but would like to hear what I teach in my retirement class, don’t be afraid to ask our State President if you can have a class for your Branch or even some of the surrounding Branches. I am not afraid of traveling anywhere in the state. I am well aware that the personnel offices don’t give a very thorough lesson on what to expect or what to do before you make the significant decision of electing to retire.
I am also available and happy to attend and say a few words at any retiree functions, should I be invited.
That’s it for now. See ya’ nest time.
