February 2002

Retiree's Corner
Dan Stacho, Director of Retirees

Looking ahead to the rest of 2002, 1 am very excited about the forthcoming Off-Year Seminar at Shanty Creek and the NALC National Convention in Philadelphia this August.

Other highlights this year include the upcoming gubernatorial race. We have the opportunity to elect a new governor for Michigan as John Engler finally leaves office. We hope to elect a governor who is concerned about retirees and working families With all of the layoffs in Michigan we also need a governor who will address the economic problems our State has and provide real solutions, not warmed over giveaways to the wealthy and to prosperous corporations. That man is David Bonior, who is proudly endorsed by the MSALC.

As previously noted, the events of last September 11 have impacted our legislative goals. But we must keep the pressure on Congress whenever we can. USPS retirees must remain strong, active, and able, working to protect the earned entitlements for all of our retirees and survivors.

As you know by now our NALC Director of Retirees Joe LaPlaca has resigned. Whenever I spoke with Brother LaPlaca he was always very helpful to me and was very supportive. We wish him well in his retirement. Here's hoping to see many of you in Shanty Creek this May.
