Retiree's Corner
Dan Stacho, Director of Retirees

When George W. Bush became President of the United States he had the largest budget surplus in the last decade. He had a mandate to shore up the sagging economy. But, what is happening the economy is still sagging and is going deeper into a recession. His crony pals and many CEO’s like Enron's Kenneth Lay are getting wealthier and wealthier while ordinary citizens are losing their savings, their 401 K's, and their health insurance benefits while these greedy CCEO’s live in luxury.

We as retirees are really struggling just to keep our head above water. It is now a safe bet that our Federal Employee's Health Benefit Plan premiums will see another 10% increase, while our cost of living increase in January 1, 2003 will probably be about 1.1% increase. Big deal!

Our Congressional leaders seem to be playing a game with our benefits. We still haven't seen any action on the Government Pension Offset and the Windfall Elimination provision and the Premium Conversion bill.

Well, November 5th is just around the corner and guess what—it's election time and these congressional representatives will be wanting our vote and our support. Well it is about time that we let them know that where were they when we needed their support, to get these bills out of committee and on the floor of the House of Representatives for a floor vote.

Where were these congressmen when we needed their support and now they want our support. They turned a deaf ear on our Retirees and our Senior Citizens.

Let us all turn out on November 5th and cast our vote for politicians that are concerned about retirees, senior citizens, and working families, and not for the corporate fat cats that line these politicians’ pockets.
