The Dance Vision Festival is a project of the Virtual Dance Festival, A Dance Sources Project
*******************************************************************************************************
This is the fourth in a series of festivals dedicated to dance as spiritual practice. The first was in New York City April 2000.
When/Where: The upcoming EARTH DAY Dance Vision Festival will take place Friday, Saturday and Sunday, April 19-21 and will occur at the Falmouth Unitarian Universalist Fellowship at 840 Sandwich Road, The Alchemy Farm studio and the Mary French Dance School. Our intention is for people in the region---old, young, dancers and non-dancers alike---to find activities in our festival that put them in the dancing mood of celebration for this beautiful planet! All of the workshops are designed for beginners with challenges still for the more experienced . If you take a workshop, you can attend the evening PERFORMANCE FREE, and also the CEREMONIES (see below.) and warm-ups---a chance to dance with professional dancers. Some workshops will prepare short pieces for the evening performances as well---(Check with workshop leader.)...
...The festival's underlying premise is that dance has always been at the spiritual heart of community...
Events: Friday evening 8:00pm Geordie Holmes, Steven Malkus, and Heidi Mrusek, full-time Falmouth residents, will appear in new works. Bobbi Bailin, another Falmouth dancer, will conduct a guided movement meditation. DANCE STORIES.....3hrs Friday April 19th 1:15-4:15pm $60
"Revisiting an event or an observation
that we have recently experienced, one that has made an
impression upon us, we will incorporate this into a small
movement phrase -- thus, a dance story-- .
Dance may be inspired by events and observations in our
lives. Our inner responses can create a path towards
personal dance making . When the dance movements come about
from such a motivation, there is clarity for the story-teller-dancer,
providing insightful feedback as well as enjoyment thru
communication..."-geordie holmes

Steven Malkus ---Workshop 3hrs Friday April 19th 10am-1pm $60
VISIONING
"This
w
orkshop is about visioning.
After a warmup we will concentrate on bringing visions up from
the source and flowing with their power as inspiration for making
your own dance.Visions are not images---they come through the
spirit and pervade the entire being, all the senses, and with
great force, feeling and clarity. They are vivid communications
from the deep well of our hopes, desires and dreams---also from
the intangible presences which surround us. In this workshop we
will learn how to crystalize these gifts into prayer and art."

WORKSHOP:EARTH
RITUALS--Saturday April 20th 4:15-6:15 $40
For over 20 years tarin chaplin, master teacher of choreography, has created and performed ritual-based, environmental, site-specific work that honors the natural and supernatural worlds--at the headwaters of Callanish standing stone circle, the Alaskan tundra, Vancouveršs English Bay, Vermontšs Calendar II, the headwaters of Jamaicašs Bueno Rio, and elsewhere. Co-author of The Intimate Act of Choreography and The Moment of Movement, she has received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, Asian Cultural Council, American-Israeli Foundation, and the Vermont Arts Council. Her work binds art, the environment, and the psyche with the Great Spirit... in the belief that many of todayšs major problems are directly related to our culturešs dearth of rituals (and the humility they foster).

WORKSHOP-RHYTHMS OF EVOLUTION--Saturday, April 20th 12:15-1:45pm $30
RHYTHMS OF
EVOLUTION will take us on a guided visioning, moving, breathing
playful and serious journey from when we were still star
material, through when we were single celled sea creatures, to
when
we evolved our spines and became fish, amphibians reptiles,
birds,
mammals, apes and humans standing upright, breathing the same air
that is shared by all the other living beings, and with a mind
prone
to innovation and exploration. We will dance and speak
personally and eloquently of this enormous "deep time"
journey, out
of which our cells, movements and consciousness has evolved, and
bring ourselves into listening to the environment, and making
dancing
rhythms with sounds, hands and body in community as a closing.
Maya Apfelbaum is an interdisciplinary performer, artist and
teacher with a MA in Arts, Culture and Ecology from Lesley University.
She often produces events with a social action focus such as "All
Souls" (http://artsept11.twindsl.com), a multi-media event for the
Boston area community after the September 11th, 2001 tragedy. She
started studying dance and gymnastics as a child, and then as a
college student and graduate, continued her studies in dance and
theatre forms ranging from Classical Indian to Modern and Contact
dance and from traditional Stanislavsky acting to avante-garde Ritual
Theatre at NYU. Maya performs her original pieces with their
pioneering spirit locally and nationally, and danced with a small
improvisational troupe called Tarnation in Boston last year. One of
her dancing career's greatest delights was dancing in Bill T. Jones'
brilliant ensemble piece "Last Supper at Uncle Tom's Cabin/The
Promised Land".

INFO ON MAYA'S PERFORMANCE PIECE:
"Elephants and the Seven Sacred Directions" is a unique and beautiful
dance/narrative that speaks in direct ways and metaphors to raise
awareness and offer a prayer for Earth and interspecies healing. It
weaves personal experiences of elephants drawn from a childhood in
India, environmental education work, and a stay at the Hohenwald
Elephant Sanctuary in Tennesee, with stories about elephants from
scientific, cultural and spiritual perspectives.
The performance combines creative gestures with movements
influenced by Indian classical dance, West African, and Modern dance.
Its story unfolds around a ritual structure of calling in the spirit
of each of the four cardinal directions: East, South West, and North,
and three remaining directions: the Earth, the Sky, and the Heart
Center.
