ETCHINGS

The etching plate, usually copper or zinc is coated with an acid resistant
material such as wax. The drawing is etched, or scratched into the waxy
ground with an etching needle, being careful not to incise into the plate.
The plate is then immersed into an "acid bath". The acid "bites", etches
into the plate into the lines the needles has made. The ground is removed,
it is inked, wiped and then placed on the etching press. A dampened sheet
of etching paper is placed over the plate and is run through the press.
