Navy News
Hello Shipmates...Last
week the Navy formally transferred ownership of the Naval Training Center's 52
acres to the San Diego Unified Port District. The port gets the land at no cost,
and the Navy will pay $3.7 million for environmental clean-up of the property.
The NTC was used as a backdrop for scenes in "Top Gun". I went to Boot
Camp on the recruit side of NTC many years ago. I will miss it. This is a end of
an era in the San Diego area.

The
Old Mill, an old Modesto landmark
will soon be gone from its location on 9th Street where it has been for
over 50 years.
I just had lunch at the Old Mill today, and drove by to look at the New Old
Mill. We took a tour through the building and boy is it great! It won't be
long now as they are finishing up the inside now and installing the kitchen
appliances. I saw the model replica of the Old Mill in the lobby and it was
great. Stop by the Old Mill before it is gone forever. As soon as they pave the
lot it won't be long.

: Books
I have read in 2000: in: 2001
page 2: 6/15/01
Some have asked how I can read so many books. I speed read, and I get them from
the library. If it is not available
I ask them to order it and they do. Use our link
to do the same. While I wait I read them at Boarder's with a cup of java or at
the coffee shop.

He who is not contented with what he has, would not be contented
with what he would like to have. -- Socrates
Humor:
On exercise, I have been working out and have lost over15 pounds
and 1 1/2" so
far using a tread mill and leg presses. I feel great! I am up to 3 1/5 to 4 MPH
now and press 200 # 20 reps. Last month I went to the south grove in Big Trees.
I went in at a 20 min mile and out in a 17 min mile. Felt good so it must be
working.
The Best Exercise is Free Walking upstairs strengthens the heart, bones and knees
Signs such as "Why WEIGHT for an elevator, take steps to save time and burn calories" are posted near elevators throughout the National Institutes of Health campus in Bethesda, Md., urging people to take the stairs instead.
These little nudges are part of a popular new strategy in work site wellness programs across the country encouraging employees to incorporate readily available exercise into their everyday lives.
Stairs are a bona fide exercise machine you don't have to go to the gym to use. The Harvard Alumni Health Study of more than 11,000 men found that those who took the stairs for at least 20 floors per week had about a 20 percent lower risk of stroke and of death from all causes during the study period.
According to this Washington Post story, taking the stairs also fights bone loss by building bone density and works against knee pain by strengthening the muscles that support the knee.
The National Cancer Institute offers suggestions on other daily activities which will make you more fit.
And recent Health SCOUT stories spotlight adventure fitness and fast workouts as other hot exercise trends.
