Shun Hei-Kwun was born and raised in a small village in China. When WWII erupted, and China was being attacked in force by Japan, a military group was created to disrupt and possibly destroy the Japanese military command structure. This organization, translated as the "Phantom Corps", drafted Shun, along with a few others with potential, and taught them to fight, to kill silently, and to be literally unseen. Operating under the creed, "A dagger at midnight is worth a thousand swords at dawn," Shun, now known as Wraith, assassinated several high-ranking Japanese military officials, always giving them a chance to defend themselves by offering them one of his own swords.

When the war ended, the Phantom Corps' funding was to be cut. The head of the Corps, however, decided that such a useful and specialized group would be priceless as merconaries, so he did not tell his operatives that the war was over. He continued to send them on assassination missions; only now they were killing anyone who had a price on their heads. When Wraith was sent to kill a young girl, he realized that he was being fooled, and fled to New York's Chinatown and effectively "disappeared."

After arriving in Chinatown, he got a job working at the "Frying Dragon" as their cook, and adopted a new name, Shaun Lau. Learning that many of his previous "marks" were not "evil men" as he thought, Shun, now Shaun, vowed to atone for his crimes, and now uses his abilities to thwart crime and stop those who deserve to be stopped, all the while keeping his true identity secrect, lest the "Phantom Corps" ever find him.

After a recent adventure with the JLA, and fighting villians far beyond what Wraith was used to, Shun found a friend and training partner in Daredevil, whom he admires as a man worth respecting and a fighter worth learning from.
