   COURSE DESCRIPTION FOR
CREATING LEGAL FORMS USING MICROSOFT WORD

This course is a must for any legal professional who wants to save time and money by creating custom automated forms. You will also discover many other legal features Word offers. Using hands-on lab activities, you will:

  • Use Word's Legal Pleading Wizard and create your own templates and template folders.
  • Create forms, insert files and create AutoText entries.
  • Add dialog boxes to templates and update fields with a macro.
  • Insert supporting documents, link a spreadsheet and create cross-references and bookmarks.
  • Create master documents and subdocuments and create a table of authorities.

LENGTH

One four hour session.

PREREQUISITES

Word 97 or 2000 - Level 1 or equivalent knowledge. You must also have a good understanding of basic Microsoft Windows, file management and personal computers.

SPECIFIC CLASS CONTENT

Lab Activity 1: Manage frequently used documents with templates
Discover Word's Legal Pleading Wizard
Create a pleading from your new template using the Legal Pleading Wizard
Organize your templates with tabs
Rid the new dialog box of excess tabs
Create a new template

Lab Activity 2: Use legal forms you already have to create new templates
Create a simple template form
Insert the template as an attachment
Create AutoText entries for common sections of text
Convert a WordPerfect file to Word

Lab Activity 3: Simplify your templates with fields and forms
Create custom dialog boxes
Create a macro to automatically update fields in a template
Take your new form for a test drive

Lab Activity 4: Manage multiple and large documents
Insert supporting files
Link to other Microsoft Office documents
Easily locate text with a bookmark
Create cross-references to manage information

Lab Activity 5: Create master documents and subdocuments
Create a master document and add subdocuments both from previously created files
Define heading styles
Arrange subdocuments in the Master Document outline view
Create a table of contents for your master document

NECESSARY SOFTWARE AND HARDWARE

  • A 486/66-compatible PC that meets minimum hardware requirements for Windows 95 or later or Windows NT 4.0 or later. A Pentium 90 MHz processor with 32 MB RAM or better is recommended. The minimum memory requirement is 16 MB RAM.
  • Windows 95, 98, or Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 3 (or higher) installed.
  • Word 97 or Word 2000.
  • Microsoft mouse or compatible pointing device.
  • A printer (optional).
  • The Legal Pleading Wizard installed. (You can install this from Word's installation disk or off of the Microsoft Web site.)
  • Text converters for Word. (These are normally installed with Word.)
  • Your own data files.
