  COURSE DESCRIPTION FOR
INTRODUCTION TO PERSONAL COMPUTERS

How well do you know your computer? This class is ideal for the beginner who wants to understand how personal computers work. Gain a greater confidence in dealing with your computer by mastering basic concepts related to IBM and compatible computers. Explore Windows 98 techniques and become acquainted with applications. The class is instructor-led and has many hands-on activities. Learn to:

  • Define and identify some fundamental personal computing concepts and terminology, such as hardware components, software and computer networks.
  • Use input devices, including the keyboard and the mouse.
  • Describe how the CPU and computer memory process information.
  • Identify the purposes of storage devices and distinguish between types of storage devices.
  • Identify several output devices and describe their uses.
  • Apply document-management concepts to create and evaluate document-management schemes.
  • Perform common Windows techniques.
  • Determine the type of application software to use for a given task.

LENGTH

Approximately eight hours. Recommend two four hour sessions.

PREREQUISITES

No experience with computers is required.

NECESSARY SOFTWARE AND HARDWARE

You will need 8 megabytes (MB) of Random Access Memory (RAM) and at least 45 MB of free hard-disk space to run Windows 95 in Standard mode. See your reference manual for specific hardware considerations.
