Wynton Marsalis named Peace Messenger Tuesday, March 20th, 2001 7:32 AM GMT Wynton Marsalis named peace messenger By WILLIAM M. REILLY UNITED NATIONS, March 20 (UPI) — Secretary-General Kofi Annan Tuesday named Wynton Marsalis, artistic director of Jazz at Lincoln Center, a Messenger of Peace, attaching a white dove pin to the musician's lapel at a brief ceremony in Annan's office. Messengers of Peace are individuals who possess widely recognized talents in the fields of arts, literature, music and sports and who have agreed to help focus attention on the work of the United Nations. For their work, the secretary-general presents them with a formal framed citation and a lapel pin in the form of a dove designed by artist Leni Fuhrman. When photographers asked for more handshaking between the diplomat and the musician, jokingly Annan chastised them, "You're treating him as a politician." Annan then asked Assistant Secretary-General Gilliam Sorensen to read the proclamation, which noted Marsalis's "desire to help focus world wide attention on the noble aims and objectives enshrined in the U.N. Charter, admiring your devotion to the creation of a safer and more stable world, the fostering of human rights and the liberation of the human spirit." The proclamation honored the trumpet player for demonstrating "time and again your dedication to what is best in humankind." It also praised him as an example of what "can be achieved when people of good will join together on behalf of a better world." It expressed hope "that through your contributions to the world of music and charity the message of peace will resound throughout the nations." After Sorensen read the proclamation, Annan approached Marsalis with the tiny pin, saying, "Now I have to pin you." "I'm getting nervous about it," Marsalis said as Annan attempted to attach it to his lapel. "Never. Don't get nervous," said Annan, securing the pin as photographers snapped pictures and the two men chuckled. "You make me nervous," Annan then said back to Marsalis, who declined Annan's invitation to say a few words. "Good. Say it through music," Annan replied. ________ Link to the Library of Congress and Information relating to JAZZ! http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/wghtml/wghome.html The once famous Bohemian Caverns is reopening in Washington, D.C. under new ownership.
