Lisa VanAuken is a graduate of the University of Houston Law
Center, where she was a member of Phi Delta Phi, a national legal honor society. Lisa has
had experience at the Harris County District Attorney's Office in its Family Criminal Law
Division, where she advocated on behalf of victims of domestic violence to obtain
protective orders.
This is what Lisa has to say about the practice of family law:
What I love about the law is that the law is, above all,
about people. It is about the people who drafted the laws, the people who are constantly
working to see the laws changed, and most importantly, it is about the people who live
every day of their lives under the law. In no area are people touched more intimately by
the law than in the area of family law. It would be extremely difficult to walk down the
street and try to find someone who has not had their lives, or the lives of someone they
know, touched by family law -- whether it's a divorce, a custody dispute, an adoption, or
a victim of family violence finally standing up against her batterer and obtaining a
protective order.
As families change, break down, and grow, people need a
helping hand, someone to advise them of their rights and help them to protect themselves
and, most importantly, their children. Through my experience working with victims of
domestic violence, I have learned to understand very clearly that being involved in a
family court matter can be extremely stressful and emotionally difficult. As your
attorney, I will work diligently to do everything in my power to help you through the
family court system as painlessly as possible. I believe that I have the sensitivity
and compassion that is required of a family law attorney, while at the same time
possessing the strength of conviction to serve as the diligent advocate you will need in
this very trying time of your life.
