Henrico County embodies the Richmond - James River area with Hanover County at the Northwest boundries. Hanover was formed from New Kent County in 1720 and is at the uppermost extremes of the James River and its tributaries. During the War between the States (1861-1864) , Union forces under Sherman sacked. looted, pillaged and burned most of Henrico and Hanover counties. Most of the early records from this time were likewise destroyed, fortunately the earliest colonial records (1600 - 1783) were duplicated and stored in England since the colonies were still under English rule. Incidentally, when General Lee made the only Confederate venture upon Union Territory at Gettysburg, the troops were ordered not to be like the Union forces and treat the civilian towns and peoples with the utmost courtesy and respect. This, along with the states rights issue, probably caused the most resentment towards the North that still exists today. Documentation exists that Lee shared Confederate rations with the towns people in Pennsylvania, contrasting the Union's behaviors in the South.
William, my eighth Great-Grandfather, married Elizabeth Jennings and was the progenitor of "The Hudsons of Hanover". Records show that William inherited his portion of the "Roxdale" tract, owned by his father, when he became of lawful age in 1689. It is not known when William moved to Hanover, but records indicated he was buried there. William and Elizabeths children were as follows:
John Hudson (my line) (abt. 1690 - 1732) who married Elizabeth Harris
William Hudson (1668 - ???)
Christopher Hudson (1690 - ???)
Charles Hudson (1694 - ???) who married Sarah Ann Royall
John, my seventh Great-Grandfather, married Elizabeth Harris in 1711. Hanover land records show that John and brothers Christopher and Charles owned contiguous land, Christophers was granted for the "transportation of immigrants". St Paul Vestry Records of Hanover show that "John Hudson's Gang" was appointed in 1715-16 to assist in clearing a road "from possum point to the main road leading down the country". John and his wife Elizabeth had the following children:
Christopher (my line) (1716 - 1779) who married Cary Byrd
Charles Hudson (1720 - 1783) who married Susannah Patrick
Cuthbert Hudson (1724 - 1801) who married Elizabeth Hall Hudson (Amelia Hudsons?)
George Hudson (1714 - ??) who married Sarah Jennings
Anna Hudson (1732 - ???)
Rebecca Hudson (1728 - ???)
John Hudson (1717 - 1801) who married Mary Greene
David Hudson (1723 - 1787)
William Hudson (1719 - 1800) who married Frances Greene
Elizabeth Hudson (1730 - ???)
Thomas Hudson (1722 - ???)
Mary Hudson (1726 - ???)
Elizabeth married Rev John Clay and was father to Henry Clay
It appears brothers Charles and William travelled together to Prince Edward Co, VA where they both died.
It appears brothers Christopher and Cuthbert travelled together to Mecklinburg Co, VA. Cuthbert continued south and died in Elbert Co, GA. Cuthbert's children were as follows:
Christopher (abt 1760 - ?) married Martha Woolridge (Residents of North Carolina and possibly Ala)
William (1761 -?)
Amphelady (1762 - ?) who married Stephen Westbrooke (Residents in North Carolina)
Elizabeth (1765 -?) who married David Northington (Residents in North Carolina)
Joshua (1770 - 1855) who married Elizabeth Marbry (born in Virginia died in Georgia)
Gylliam (1772 - 1853) (born in NC died in Indiana
Joakim (Joseph) (1752 - 1808) married Anne McCauley (born in Virginia died in Georgia)
Susannah (1778 - 1825) who married Charnell Hightower (residents in North Carolina)
Bathsheba (1780 - ???) married Abraham Burton
Mary (1754 - ???) married John Burton
Chistopher, my sixth Great-Grandfather, married Cary Byrd and moved from Hanover Co to Mecklinburg Co, VA. Christopher, a Captain in the military and the Revolutionary War, rode to the "frontier" with his men in 1758. It is possible that the "frontier" he marched to was the Dickson, Tennessee area evidenced by the migration of his children to this area in 1799 and 1800. A Mecklinburg Co will book (book 1 - page 312, dated 7/25/1778, recorded 10/11/1779) lists wife Cary and the following children as heirs to his estate:
William Hudson (my line) (abt 1750 - 1821) married Eliz.Baker aft. 1773 and Taffernous Moore aft. 1787
thbert Hudson (176x - 1821) married Lucy Goodwin
Cary Greenwood
John Hudson (175x - 1838)
Rebecca Wagstaff
Sabre Hudson
Son William was a Lietenant in the Revolutionary War receiving a substantial land grant for his efforts.
Sons John and Cuthbert also appear to have fought in the Revolution and received land grants.
Son Cuthbert was a Captain at the Dickson Co outpost, and also fought in the War of 1812 with brother John.
Son Cuthbert's children with Lucy were listed in a Dickson Co, Tn will as Cuthbert, Joshua, Susanna and Christopher.
