Area 51, Day 2:
I awoke that morning very tired and sore. The Little A'Le'Inn opens at 8am, the current time was 5:30am. We had a few hours to kill before we could check into our rooms. There are a few dirt roads throughout the area; some of which will take you into the base itself. We drove down one of these roads; close enough to see the restricted area sign and the electronic sensor devices, along with the tripod mounted video cameras. At the top of one ridge, you can see a radar tower. This is the only part of the base that is visible. The government has annexed the old vantage points, most notably Freedom Ridge. The only place you can get a reasonable view of the base is from Tikaboo Peak, but it's one hell of a trek to get there and you'd better bring some decent binoculars. |
| After awhile we headed back into Rachel, had some breakfast at the Little A'Le'Inn, and checked into our room. The "rooms" are actually trailers divided into 3 sections, the bathrooms are shared. They have one pay phone in Rachel, but you'll need to call collect because it doesn't accept change. Forget about your cell phones, nothing reaches outside the mountains. They do have TV in the rooms, but since they don't have a satellite hookup you won't get anything on them. Fortunately they have VCR's in the rooms, and you are allowed to borrow movies from the Little A'Le'Inn for free. |

It wasn't quite dark yet, so we decided to visit the Area 51 trailer. Basically, it's a trailer filled with several books on UFO's and some Area 51 merchandise. It used to be run by a man called Glenn Campbell who may or may not have been more interested in money than UFO's. I've heard several conflicting opinions about this man. Anyway, the new owner is a German computer programmer named Joerg. We talked to him awhile and I asked about some good radio frequencies to listen to out there. He gave me a list of all known Area 51 frequencies. Let it be said that a good radio scanner is useful, but all the interesting stuff will be encrypted using military grade encryption. So called "de-scramblers" aren't going to work. |
