Navajo Chickens

A discussion about Navajo folk art would be incomplete without mentioning chickens . . . those crazy chickens! Many Navajo artists exist in this movement and our pleasure is watching the constant and rapid innovation in the Navajo folk art. As with other forms of Native American art, it brings great pleasure to the owner. Perhaps its best contribution is the laughter and smiles it inspires while it pushes you to look deeper into the Navajo viewpoint. More from the Collector's Guide...

Navajo Hand Beaded Medicine Jar with Leather Bottom

This beautiful hand beaded glass jar was purchased from a Navajo woman at Hard Rock on the Navajo Reservation. I visited this remote part of the reservation with the Adopt a Native Elder Program. She doesn't always have these beaded jars when I visit. They are absolutely beautiful. This jar measures 3.5 inches tall and approx. 3 inches in diameter. It is hand beaded and hand sewn. The bottom is finished in black leather. It has a screw top.

Be donated to the Adopt a Native Elder Program

Lena made this necklace with coral, shell, serpentine and turquoise. It is
a great piece of Navajo folk art.

It is good to realize that if love and peace can prevail on earth, and if we can teach our children to honor nature's gifts, the joys and beauties of the outdoors will be here forever.
