Sex, Sexuality and Sexually Transmitted Diseases - Information and Resources for Social Workers

We have collected links to sites from around the world that we believe are good resources for information on sex, sexuality, sexually transmitted diseases and related information of interest to Social Workers.

About Sexuality - Great information from About.com/NY Times on sex and sexuality. The writer, Cory Silverberg, is a sex educator, author, media contributor and researcher.

AIDS/HIV - From About.com. Mark Cichocki RN is an HIV/AIDS nurse specialist at the University of Michigan's HIV/AIDS Treatment Program. His extensive knowledge of HIV and AIDS along with a sympathetic personal touch provides a friendly, welcome atmosphere for everyone who visits his site.

Gay Life - From About.com. Ramon Johnson is the face of gay life on the About.com network, a part of The New York Times Company and top ten web-based information and resource syndicate. Ramon provides progressive and often personal advice on topics important to the everyday lives of gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning people. Be it through a solution to the common love, sex or relationship quandary or a step–by-step guide to coming out, Ramon reaches a wide-spread audience with a diverse and unique perspective.

Glossary of Sexual Terms (U.S.) - Compiled by About.com

Go Ask Alice - Columbia University’s health question and answer Internet service. Easy to understand answers to the questions people want to ask but probably don't. A good credible resource for information on sex and health issues.

Latin American Center on Sexuality and Human Rights (South America) - Website in English and Spanish. The fundamental purpose of the Latin-American Center on Sexuality and Human Rights is to produce, organize, and disseminate knowledge about sexuality from a human-rights perspective, in order to help fight gender inequality and to contribute to the struggle against the discrimination of sexual minorities in the region. Through dialogue with universities, social movements and policymakers in Latin America, the Center coordinates the activities of researchers, activists and other partners interested in encouraging the academic, social and political debate on sexuality and human rights, comprising Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru and Colombia.

Lesbian Life - An excellent site written by Kathy Belge. From Kathy: I've been a lesbian activist for more than 15 years. Lesbian culture is my passion. I am a freelance writer and write for several gay and lesbian publications. I've worked for years as an advocate for LGBT youth and directed a queer youth program.

National Sexuality Resource Center (US) - The National Sexuality Resource Center gathers and disseminates the latest accurate information and research on sexual health, education, and rights. Through active outreach to advocates, academics, researchers, policy makers, and diverse communities, NSRC initiates constructive dialogues—both online and face-to-face—on sexuality to promote social justice and improve the quality of life in the United States. The website contains resources, publications and news regarding issues related to sexuality.

Planned Parenthood (US) - Sexual health information, clinic locations and advocacy information from Planned Parenthood.

Polygamist Marriage and Child Brides - With the arrest of Polygamist leader, Warren Jeffs, much needed attention has been focused on the communities of Colorado City, Arizona and Hilldale, Utah. I wrote an article describing the isolation of these communities and providing information and links to advocacy organizations that work to help the at-risk children and families in these Polygamist communities. I also recommend that everyone view at least the trailer of the documentary, Banking on Heaven. There is a link on the article.

Seniors and Sexuality - Getting older doesn’t mean losing your desire for sex or your need for affection and intimacy.

Sex in Traditional Chinese Culture - Chinese are more traditional than Western people. Talking about sex is controversial. Whenever sex is mentioned, Chinese people usually consider it as being in bad taste. This tradition causes the lack of education about sex issues. (About.com article)

Sexual Health Glossary - From Planned Parenthood.

Sexuality and Arthritis - Sexuality is a pleasurable activity shared by partners as an expression of love and intimacy. Ideally, a healthy and satisfying sex life solidifies the union between partners. There are certain factors which can however interfere with deriving pleasure and satisfaction from sex. (About.com article)

Talking About Reproductive and Sexual Health Issues - TARSHI (India) - TARSHI works towards expanding sexual and reproductive choices in people’s lives in an effort to enable them to enjoy lives of dignity, freedom from fear, infection, and reproductive and sexual health problems. Included in this excellent website are resources and links to more information.

South and Southeast Asia Resource Centre on Sexuality (India) - The South and Southeast Asia Resource Centre on Sexuality website has information on a wide range of issues related to sexuality. It is a rich resource for activists, academics, researchers, students and policymakers working on sexuality and related issues of sexual and reproductive rights and health, HIV/AIDS, violence against women, sex work, LGBT issues and more.
