Reunion 2000 Letter From Nancy Genung DuquenneOctober, 2000 Dear classmates, The worker bees have been at it again. Although we feel the weekend in August was a huge success, perhaps we are jaded from doing the planning and have it wrong. Most comments have been positive and many of us have received phone calls or written notes saying they had fun and enjoyed the 3-day event. Three improvements we will try to make if there is another reunion: (1) Some wanted dessert with the Saturday night meal, which was inadvertently omitted when hors d'oeuvres were instated during the planning process. (2) We should have, at some point, repeated and drawn directions to the fish fry and banquet during our correspondences. At least two members paid and could not find us. (Refunds were made not only to them, but to everyone who paid and then could not attend any part of the weekend.) And (3) Some one should have enforced time constraints on the Saturday night program, because many have said the program could have been shorter or eliminated to give those in attendance more time to visit with each other. Some attended Saturday night and missed the opportunity to visit at length, as many of us did on Friday eve, Saturday morning, and the hospitality time the afternoon at the Clarion prior to the meal at the Country Club. Everyone who worked put heart and souJrmoney, and hours of preparation in order to bring as many as possible to the different functions. Our gratitude and appreciation to ALL who contributed- and you know who you were--whether it be two, three, four years ago or on the last weekend! The committee does not take the credit. The participation by the whole class was the reason for the memorable times. Videos are not ready yet. But, hopefully, you are patient and will enjoy yours when it is ready. If you know of anyone who did not receive a picture and would like one or who purchased one and did not stay to pick it up, notify Mary Catherine Casey or anyone of us here locally and we will see that you get one. If you purchased a picture you will find enclosed a key to help with those attending We have some money left to invest after all bills are in. Perhaps it can go towards a next get-together or if that is not wanted, the balance can, at that time, be contributed for a school project in honor of our class. We are eager to hear what would make things better from your viewpoint. On behalf of the committee members, Nancy Genung Duquenne
Previous Reunion 2000 Letter From Nancy Genung DuquenneDear Classmates and Spouses, Just as I appointed myself “official greeter” Friday evening, I proclaim myself the most eager to re-touch each of you to thank you for your interest, your patience (during the blackout and if you were able to sit through Saturday evening in total---somehow the program went too long and for that I (we) apologize---),your cooperation at the Golf Outing, the Fish Fry, and the wonderful conversations that took place each time a group of us gathered around. The Bus tour past the house the guys built in class, the Edison Middle School known to us as CHS, and the new Transportation Building across from the Amtrak or old Il. Central tracks on University Ave. If someone steps forward and takes on the 55th, I overheard that that would be a wonderful site. Don’t throw my name or Terry’s in the ring, however. The Hospitality Room furnished by the Clarion was hosted by Bob Kabel ,and Jackie Johnston Miller made refreshments available and it was fun scanning over old yearbooks from 1945 Retros to the Maroons for 1948 -1950 and renewing old acquaintances. Dave White surprised me with a picture taken probably at his sixth birthday party with Mary Alice Hoover and me and him and a few others sitting on the running board of his Dad’s convertible coupe. Neat. More treasures for our senior memories and moments. After a scant short while, those of us pre-registered went to the Champaign Country Club on Prospect and enjoyed the great meal and the fabulous charts listing our deceased classmates---may they rest in peace--, the push pin exhibit map showing groups of ‘mates and where they live now, and other displays. We broke into groups at mealtimes with varied attendees, and walked to Friday’s or some other place for food, drink, and to rest. Some went to luncheons, others ate in their rooms, but when we were on our own we were seldom alone—joining one another to hang out. For instance, I, being a townie again, hung with anyone who answered the door in the section set aside for our class. If the gals I expected to answer were off to WalMart or someplace, I got Gene Priest or Bill Callahan or anyone else around to gab in the hall until we could kibbitz with others coming and going. It was great fun. We pestered Martha Weaver or the Kaufman’s (Doris Jean and hubby) or anyone else slipping around. We had a tremendous weekend of sharing kisses and hugs ( Joan D.Whitmore said the hugs are the part she will remember best about the reunion.) and old times. People would come to me and say “ Do you sense the feeling of LOVE around you? Fifty years ago we were too awkward or embarrassed or self-centered or indifferent to express ourselves. Some cobwebs hanging around in my head cleared away as I asked questions I was too shy to ask fifty years ago. I guess we realize at our ages no one is going to spirit off with our significant other person and we’d better appreciate the time and inconveniences and long distances it took many of our friends to attend this final reunion, if, in fact that turns out to be true. I shall endeavor to thank those who deserve our extra thanks, whether they were goaded to help, or whether some decided they wanted to part of perhaps this last fling. I know two or more of us couldn’t have made it the weekend to remember by ourselves. No way. Mary Ann McGee Hood got the name tags for Friday night. She neglected to tell us tho’ we would have the same problems I.D.-ing( without the tags ) if we crumpled them up at the end of the evening. So some were still whispering at sat. morning bus tour “Who is that now? And the wife’s name.” Decorations were a team effort broadening to many hands helping, instead of the two volunteers at the reunion five years ago: Dodds and Genung. Saturday evening at the Country Club was excellently done. Terry is great with town contacts everywhere so he did a lot of early preparation and ground work which is not highlighted, but the workers close to him know the hours put in (and don’t forget to applaud wife Nancy Davis who not only helped but who had to be the listener for five years of all of us). Another long amount of time was spent contacting and locating classmates with newer names and addresses. Some of us worked months and sleuthed around to do the contacts. Many “worker bees” do so much and get very little credit. I will try to include many I know about, but may miss some people who were involved in the spin-off. If I inadvertently left your name off the list, you can thump me when you next see me. Come forward and I will recognize your service.
A fond farewell to all those attending and those who did not… From the committee at the beginning to the huge participation of fellow workers at the end who pulled it all together…Love and hugs “till we meet again”. Nancy Genung Duquenne
