Who
Moved Our Sign?
The historic "Lake
Keuka 1 Mile" sign used to hang above the four corners
intersection of Elm and Main Streets in downtown Penn Yan. The
sign had been floating over the busy traffic of Main Street,
directing people to 'Lake Keuka' for 50 years or more. Abruptly,
several years ago, the sign went missing.
Who moved it?
Penn Yan's
mayor Douglas Marchionda has
the sign. He says he is "working on" repainting it.
Yes, the mayor's personal interest in the sign is admirable.
But how many years does it take to repaint a small sign? He
has been "working on it" for too long. The job should
not take five years.
Perhaps,
if the mayor can't find the time to repaint the sign, he
should turn the task over to someone else who can
find the time.

We Want Our Sign Back!
Update: under pressure from
the community, the village put up a new sign in November 2004
rather than restore the old one. The new sign is somewhat similar
to the old, although it lacks the same coloration/character.
The whereabouts of the old sign is unknown.
