Book of Shadows

When I first started looking into Wicca, I kept coming accross references to a "Book of Shadows". I also kept wondering what it was until I finally figured out that a book of shadows is simply a spell book. Way back when in the early days of Wicca, there was no written word, so everyone simply memorized their spells. Later, witches began to write their spells down in secret books. New initiates to the coven were allowed to copy spells from other's book into thier own "Book of Shadows". On most web pages, if you click the link to the Book of Shadows, you get a list of spells. I am not going to do that here (except for one very basic protection spell) because spellwork is more than just muttering a few words over a burning candle. When we "cast spells" we are calling on forces larger than ourselves to do our bidding. This is not to be undertaken without careful preparation. As I add to this site, I will discuss that more. For now, I can suggest some excellent books which will help you to undertake spell casting without danger to yourself or to your family.

First, here is the spell:

Goddess within, Goddess without,
Cast a circle all about;
Keep love in;
Keep evil out.

This should be chanted while walking sunwise (or clockwise) around whatever you are wanting to protect. Before you do the spell, get a small glass and fill it with water. The glass can be as nice or as plain as you want it to be. Mix some salt in the water. You can use plain table salt for now; later, when you have the chance, get some sea salt and put a pinch or two in the water. Carry the glass of salty water around with you while you walk and chant, constantly dipping your fingers into the water/salt mixture and then flicking your fingers into the air.
