PITTSBURGH PARROT RESCUE

West Nile Virus Alert

Please keep your birds indoors especially in early morning and early evening hours.  West Nile virus can kill your birds.

Success:

Morgan looked for a new home for a long time and has finally been given a permanent loving home.

Shiloh got his name because he is so shy he would hide behind his toys. He is now coming out of his shell in his new home and getting more bold.

Aristotle is a typical Cockatoo. Very loud but at normal times of the day. Everyone that attends our classes is taught that ALL birds are loud, destructive, demanding, and they bite. Aristotle is now with someone who understands his behaviors.

Adoption policies are as follows:

  • The attendance of 2 seminars is required (Nutrition/Basic Care & Safety, and  Basic Behavior Problems) for the adoption of a medium to large parrot. Admission to the seminars is $5.00/person per seminar (members attend free). Adoption of small birds requires the attendance of the Basic Care & Safety seminar. No pre-registration is required - we never charge our members a fee to attend monthly seminars.

  • After completion of the required seminars you must complete an adoption application. This is reviewed by the adoption committee and if approved a home inspection will be scheduled. The Executive Director or Board Member reserves the right to visit the adoptors home before and after adoption.

  • You must sign a contract and if for any reason the adoption does not work out you must return the bird to PPR and we may work with you to find the right bird for your situation.

  • Adoption fees are $10.00 for a small bird (Budgies, Cockatiels, Lovebirds, etc.); $75.00 for a medium sized parrot (Conures, Ringneck Parakeets, etc.); $175.00 for a large parrot (Amazons, Greys, small Cockatoos, etc.); and $300.00 for a Macaw or large Cockatoo. Additional to the adoption fees are vet fees the bird may have incurred.

  • Included in the adoption fee for medium or large birds is a one year subscription to the Companion Parrot Quarterly, which is packed full of helpful information to keep your new bird healthy and happy.

  • Children under 18 years of age must have parents attend seminars and sign applications.

You must live within a one-hour drive of pittsburgh to adopt a bird because we do home inspections and cannot travel out of our area

The most asked question: we have owned birds a long time why do we have to come to classes?

Answer: Everyone tells us this but we don't know you. The reason for the seminars is because it is a way for us to get to know you before letting you take a bird home. The birds in our program were donated to our organization knowing that we go to great lengths to find the right home for them. The right home is with someone willing to take the time to learn new things. There is new research being done on parrot care everyday, people who own parrots should keep up with all the information.

  • We accept birds donated to PPR.

  • We do not breed birds or place birds into breeding situations. We do not ship birds.

  • As a general rule we do not adopt birds as companions to other birds.

  • We do not adopt to children or as gifts to children.

  • We will only adopt a bird if the whole family wants the bird.

  • As a general rule we do not adopt to homes that already have a large number of birds.

  • Adopted birds are to remain in the home and be treated as a member of the family. They may not be sold, given away, bred or used for any type of monetary purposes.

  • Approved applicants will be placed on a waiting list if a suitable bird is not currently in our adoption program.

  • If interested in adopting a large bird as your first time bird you will be required to attend handling training before a bird is placed in your home.

  • As a general rule we will not place a extremely loud bird in an apartment or condo without written approval from your landlord

Our focus is on the welfare of the bird. They've usually been through enough homes already in their short life. We are trying to find long-term permanent situations for them. There is no guarantee if you attend the classes and apply that you will get a bird. We are not a pet store.
