PITTSBURGH
PARROT RESCUE
West Nile Virus Alert
Please
keep your birds indoors especially in early morning and early evening
hours. West Nile virus can kill your birds.
Our adoptable birds are kept
in foster care until they can be placed in permanent homes. Foster
care allows us to improve the adoptability of the bird and to increase the
chances that the bird will find a permanent home. Foster parents
work on behavior or health problems that the bird may have, socialize the
bird in a home environment, and really make a difference in the bird's
life.
It takes a special person to
foster birds. Here's what you need to know to become a foster
parent:
First and foremost you
must be able to commit time to the organization and to the birds that
you foster. You must attend a foster parent training program and
volunteer meetings on a regular basis.
After completion of
training you start by fostering a small bird. After 6 months you
have the opportunity to foster a larger bird.
You must have at least one
year handling experience to foster a medium to large bird.
You must be willing to
take on the challenge of birds that may have behavior or health
problems. You must be willing to work with these birds to modify their
behavior or health.
You must have reliable
transportation.
You must be able to foster
birds on a long term basis.
You must be able and
willing to provide everything necessary for the bird's well-being
while in your care.
You must have access to an
Avian Veterinarian
If you think you are ready to
