GERRY (2002) **1/2

Reviewed 2/20/03

Two men who are both named Gerry (Matt Damon and no, not Ben, but the other Affleck, Casey) go on a hike and get lost in the desert, and virtually the entire movie is devoted to their crossing the landscape.  Sure to bore and/or infuriate large portions of the audience everywhere (has this film ever been shown without a walkout?), it is not without some very powerful moments mostly owing to its incredible visuals.  It’s at its best during its breathtaking KOYAANISQATSI moments, though the real influence to director Gus Van Sant here is Bela Tarr and his amazing tracking shots.   There’s even an homage to SATANTANGO’s scene of traversing a windswept street.  The movie does have its not infrequent boring patches and sometimes it veers into experimental film territory hoping to hypnotize you with simple movement, but there’s nothing else quite like it.  Hopefully the above description will sufficiently tell you whether you’ll be exhilarated or put to sleep, or in my case, both.
